The Eternal Word

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”

John 1:1

Our minds cannot grasp this eternal Truth; we simply must sit quietly in reverent awe.

“In the beginning was the Word.”

No mortal mind can fathom the mystery of this phrase. Our minds are so finite—yea, so “linear,” with beginning and ending points—that we cannot picture infinity. We can only bow our heads, catch our breath and whisper, “How awesome is Your Name, O Lord.”



Before there was anything, the God of creation looked out into that vast vacuum of nothingness and said “I think I’ll create something.” And, create something He did through the second Person of the three-in-one-Godhead, His Son, Jesus. Just as we cannot put our mental fingers around “no beginning and no end,” neither can we understand the Trinity. Attempting to do so will likely either lead to perplexing despair or total insanity.



Yet, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t engage in “righteous rumination”—i.e., spiritually “chewing the cud” (Ps. 1:2-3) on this deep Mystery of “the Word (Jesus)” being “with God” and “God Himself” all at the same time.



It’s easy to see the parallel here between Gen. 1:1 (“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”) and John’s depiction and declaration of Who Jesus was/is. Just as God created everything in the beginning (except Adam and Eve) by speaking, so does He usher in the New Creation through “the Word made flesh” (Jn. 1:12, 14; Heb. 1:1-3; II Cor. 5:17).



Is not this a wonderful Truth? Is it not also a Blessed Assurance?

Yes. A thousand times yes. Hallelujah!!



So, when we contemplate the Person of Christ. . .Who He is. . .what He came to do. . .and how He still transforms lives by His indwelling Presence. . .we can only cry “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing” (Rev. 5:12).



And, it is this Resurrection Reality that should cause us to go forth as His witnesses—yea, as His “ambassadors,” who’ve been given the “Ministry and the Word of reconciliation” because of what Jesus accomplished on the Cross (II Cor. 5:18-21).



Oh, dear Pilgrim, when you were being knitted in secret in your mother’s womb, Christ—the Living Word—was there (Ps. 139), creating you in His Image (the ability to love, worship and serve Him). Since your birth, He’s been a “very Present Help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1), even if you didn’t see or sense His Presence. Even at this very moment, He’s right there with you. . .as you read these words. . .whispering “Do not fear; I am here”. . .as He slips His firm, loving arm around you. So, do not fear, weary one; the Prince of Peace, Who is also the Great Physician and Wonderful Counselor, is with you. You have God’s Word on it. Glory!!
