Trivia: What's the Equivalent Of Tithing In Christians To Muslims'

Answer:

Zakat is what the Muslims call for their giving. Generally speaking, most Muslims says that they do not require giving, just like what Christians whether they are Catholic or protestants.

For the sake of knowledge, let me give you some insights about Zakat and the rates that it teaches.

For Muslims, it is an obligation to help their brothers who are in need. And it is where Zakat goes and being spent. It basically mean "alms for the poor" and and frequently compared to tithing of Christians. Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Muslims.

If the Christians teaches Tithing which is 10% of your income, Muslim teaches 3 different rates for Zakat.

It is an obligation on Muslims to pay 1/40 (2.5%) of the wealth which they have had for a full lunar year,1/40 (2.5%) of goods used for trade, and 5% or 10% of certain type of harvests depending on irrigation. Exempt from Zakat are a person's house and personal transportation.

In addition accoroding to my research, a rate of 20% should be given from oil, precious metal (ex. gold and silver) which you find in the piece of land that you own. (Click here for the source)

Funny though, Christians keeps on complaining to their pastors and priests whenever it teaches about Tithing which is 10%, and about generous giving. So far though (in my experience), I never heard Muslims complaining about their Zakat whose rate is from 2.5%-20%.

In the end, no one will claim that their religion is for money. One fact is true; both the Bible and the Quran teaches to give generously both to those who are in need and out of your thanksgiving to God.
